Sheriff Kumba Jobe Esq., is one of the most notable young private legal practitioners in The Gambia, who has distinguished himself in his professional sphere within the country is our millennial feature. He is the youngest in the country’s history just five years standing at The Gambia Bar to have successfully defended treason charges before the Court of Appeal by securing the acquittal and discharge of military officers charged with treason. As a legal practitioner, he has been defending underprivileged people charged with criminal offences before the subordinate and superior courts in The Gambia. He is involved in several constitutional, human rights and public interest litigations in the High Court, Supreme Court of The Gambia and the African Court on Human and People’s Rights Court.
Sheriff’s passion for justice, rule of law and democracy led him to co-found a civil society organization called the Centre for Legal Support (CLS) in The Gambia which mainly focuses on providing pro bono legal services to people who cannot afford to hire services of lawyers. In these capacities, he continues to serve hundreds of underprivileged people by enhancing and promoting access to justice, rule of law and equality which have meaningfully impacted their lives and the rights of citizens.
After four years of working under the Doyen of the Gambian Bar as an Associate Legal Practitioner, coupled with the experience he garnered working in the public and civil service as a State Counsel at Attorney General’s Chambers & Ministry of Justice, Sheriff moved to found a law practice called Sunu Law Chambers (SLC) and presently he serves as its Managing Partner. SLC is a full-service commercial law firm advising individuals and corporations about their legal rights and responsibilities, and representing them in litigation of civil and criminal cases, business transactions, and other matters in which legal advice and other assistance are sought.
He possesses a wealth of experience in litigation of civil and criminal matters, negotiation and settlement of disputes, drafting of private and commercial legal instruments, and legislations, capacity building and advocacy at a domestic level. He is self-motivated, resourceful, hardworking, a fighter and a go-getter legal Practitioner.

1. What makes practice exciting for Sherriff?
He believes that the testimonies and feedback he receives every day from clients and individuals is a huge morale booster that makes him love and wanting to do more. To clients, he loves being the solution provider, adding value and impacting their lives and rights. He enjoys seeing his clients smile walking out from the courtroom or the board room.
2. What is his philosophy of impacting the nation through the practice of law?

Most importantly, h believes the law can be used to advance socio-economic development, strengthen democracy, ensure accountability and protect the most vulnerable in society; those whose lives have been blighted by armed conflict or repressive regime, hence there is no better way to impact a nation than through legal practice for him.
3. What is the next big thing he is working on?
Making SLC one of the biggest law firms in The Gambia is his topmost priority. Thus, he is working day and night to attract the brightest legal minds to SLC while ensuring that clients’ satisfaction is optimised.
4. What does Sheriff consider the millennials greatest strength?
He thinks millennials are a very lucky generation because millennials are blessed and endowed with the minds and confidence to leverage digital technology which is the most resourceful tool of our generation to build network and bridges amongst us as a vehicle to promote global peace, security and prosperity.
