Adam Malek is a French-Algerian lawyer admitted to the Paris Bar. He serves as an Associate at Darci, a French boutique dedicated to the full lifecycle of international construction contracts, from drafting to dispute resolution.
Before joining Darci, Adam trained and worked with leading law firms such as Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, Clifford Chance and De Gaulle Fleurance, in France (Paris) and in Switzerland (Zurich). He has also assisted arbitrators and mediators in a Parisian boutique where he acted as a legal consultant for arbitration proceedings related to the aerospace industry (RSDA).
Adam has been involved in the representation of parties, both in commercial and investment arbitration, operating in various sectors such as aerospace, mining, and energy. He has developed in-depth expertise in the construction industry.
Adam also appears before French courts in arbitration-related proceedings such as the enforcement and annulment of arbitral awards and the procurement and retention of interim relief, as well as commercial disputes.
Adam is committed to the arbitration community. He is a member of Young ICCA; and a former board member and head of communication of the French Club de l’arbitrage. He is also the co-founder of DZ VYAP.
Finally, Adam is regularly invited to give lectures for leading academic programmes at Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne University (since 2020), HEAD law school (since 2025) or the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (since 2025).
1. Every great journey begins with a spark. What ignited Adam’s passion for the legal profession, and what continues to make the practice of law a deeply fulfilling pursuit for him?
For Adam Malek, the journey into law was not driven by a lifelong dream. It was, in many ways, the result of chance and self-discovery.
After high school, Adam enrolled in a classe préparatoire in Paris with a specialisation in science, preparing for the entrance examinations to the French Grandes Écoles. At the time, Adam knew very little – not to say anything – about the legal profession. He had chosen the scientific path simply because he was a good student and achieved good results in those subjects – not because he was genuinely passionate about them.
During Adam’s first year, however, he realised that he was following a path that he did not truly enjoy. Adam began questioning what he really wanted to do. He had always been fascinated by history. As a child, he spent countless hours reading about dinosaurs, ancient Greece, the Roman Empire and civilisations that shaped our world. That passion naturally led him to enroll in the dual Bachelor’s degree in Law and History at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University.
Ironically, history was Adam’s first choice, while law initially served as a practical alternative. He knew it offered strong professional opportunities, but Adam had no idea how intellectually stimulating it could become.
The real turning point came during an internship at a boutique Parisian law firm specialising in dispute resolution, primarily commercial litigation, while Adam was completing his Master’s degree. For the first time, he witnessed law in action. He discovered that legal rules were not merely theoretical concepts found in textbooks, but powerful tools used to build arguments, solve complex problems, defend clients’ interests and ultimately persuade judges and arbitrators.
That experience completely changed his perspective. He realised that what truly fascinated him was not simply understanding the law but using it strategically to resolve disputes. From that moment on, Adam knew he wanted to become a disputes lawyer. International arbitration later appeared as the perfect combination of everything he enjoys: complex legal reasoning, an international environment, strategic thinking and the opportunity to work with people from different legal and cultural backgrounds.
What continues to motivate Adam today is precisely this combination. Every case presents new factual, legal and human challenges, and there is always something new to learn. It is a profession that rewards curiosity, discipline and creativity in equal measure, and Adam finds that incredibly fulfilling.
2. The legal landscape is constantly evolving. In Adam’s opinion, what qualities define a truly exceptional lawyer in today’s world, and how can young professionals cultivate these attributes?
The legal profession is evolving at an unprecedented pace, especially with artificial intelligence. Yet, despite technological advances, Adam believes the qualities that truly distinguish exceptional lawyers remain profoundly human.
Technical excellence is, of course, indispensable. Clients expect lawyers who master the law, understand complex issues as well as their needs and produce rigorous work. There is no substitute for hard work, intellectual curiosity and continuous learning. The day a lawyer believes he has nothing left to learn is probably the day he begins falling behind.
However, technical skills alone are not enough.
In Adam’s opinion, the lawyers who leave a lasting impact are those who know how to build relationships, inspire trust and bring people together. Whether leading a legal team, negotiating with opposing counsel or working alongside experts from different disciplines, success depends largely on communication, empathy and emotional intelligence. These are qualities that no algorithm can truly replicate.
Adam also believes humility is one of the most underrated virtues in the profession. Law is far too broad for anyone to know everything. Great lawyers ask questions, seek advice from more experienced colleagues and remain open to different perspectives. Every case, every client and every discussion offer an opportunity to improve.
Adam’s advice to law students and early professionals is therefore simple: invest as much in your character as you do in your technical skills. Work hard, stay curious, read beyond the law, observe how experienced practitioners interact with clients and colleagues, and never underestimate the importance of kindness and professionalism. Your reputation is built not only on the quality of your legal analysis but also on the way people feel after working with you.
In a world where technology will increasingly automate technical tasks, humanity may well become the greatest professional advantage.
3. True leaders are always thinking ahead. What is the next groundbreaking project or initiative that Adam is or would be working on and what impact is he hoping it will make?
Adam cannot reveal all the details just yet, but many of the projects he is currently developing share a common objective: contributing to the development of the legal and arbitration community in Algeria and, more broadly, across Africa.
As the son of Algerian parents, Adam has always maintained a strong connection with his family’s country of origin. Adam genuinely believes that Algeria possesses tremendous legal talent and enormous economic potential. At the same time, there is still significant room to strengthen international visibility, encourage exchanges with practitioners abroad and create new opportunities for the next generation of lawyers.
This ambition partly inspired the creation of DZ VYAP, an initiative Adam launched last year alongside several talented Algerian friends. Their goal is simple but meaningful: to create a platform where young Algerian legal professionals can connect, exchange ideas, share opportunities and build bridges with the international legal community. They want to demonstrate that excellence exists everywhere and that collaboration is one of the strongest drivers of progress.
Beyond DZ VYAP, Adam has several other ideas that he hopes to bring to life in the coming months and years. They all revolve around the same conviction: knowledge should be shared, networks should be inclusive and talented young professionals should have access to opportunities regardless of where they come from.
If these initiatives can contribute, even modestly, to making Algeria and Africa more visible within the international arbitration community, encourage greater collaboration and inspire younger generations to pursue ambitious careers, then Adam will consider them successful.
4. Which legal minds have profoundly influenced Adam’s journey, and what book has shaped or is shaping his thoughts and perspectives?
The person who has influenced Adam the most is not a legal scholar but his own father.
Adam’s father came to France from Algeria in the early 1980s with little more than the hope of building a better future for his family. Throughout his life, he worked tirelessly to provide them with stability, never complaining regardless of how difficult circumstances could be. Coming from a modest background and belonging to both a religious and ethnic minority, he faced challenges that Adam can only partially imagine. Yet he always responded with dignity, kindness and perseverance.
He taught Adam that hard work is not something to boast about but simply something you do. He showed Adam that humility is a strength rather than a weakness, that kindness costs nothing and that resilience often matters more than talent. In Adam’s opinion, whatever professional achievements he may have, they will always pale in comparison with the example his father has set throughout his life. Adam sincerely hopes that one day he can become even half the man his father is.
Professionally, one person who has profoundly shaped Adam’s career is Professor Thomas Clay. Adam met Professor Clay while serving as President of the Sorbonne Legal Clinic, of which he was – and remains – the patron. He encouraged Adam at key moments in Adam’s academic journey and played a decisive role in his decision to specialise in international arbitration. Looking back, Adam says that without Professor Clay’s guidance, his professional path might have been very different.
As for books, Adam finds it difficult to choose only one because he enjoys reading across many disciplines, particularly history, religion and biography. To Adam, these subjects remind us that law never exists in isolation; it is deeply connected to societies, cultures and human behavior. Reading beyond legal textbooks has undoubtedly made Adam a better lawyer by helping him better understand the people behind the disputes.
5. For those who are just beginning, the path may seem daunting. What advice or guiding principles would Adam offer young legal professionals and advocates trying to find their place and purpose in the legal terrain?
Adam’s first piece of advice is simple: never stop believing in yourself.
Every lawyer experiences moments of doubt. There will always be someone who appears more experienced, more knowledgeable or more successful. Do not let those comparisons discourage you. Confidence is not about believing you know everything; it is about trusting your ability to learn, improve and overcome challenges. If you stop believing in yourself, it becomes difficult to convince anyone else to believe in you.
Secondly, embrace hard work. There are no shortcuts in this profession. The lawyers people admire today have usually spent years building their expertise through discipline, sacrifice and persistence. Success rarely happens overnight.
Adam would also encourage young practitioners to remain kind. The legal profession is demanding, but that should never prevent us from treating others with respect and generosity. Help people whenever you can. Share your knowledge. Support your colleagues. Some people will eventually return the favour, others may not. That should not matter. Doing the right thing is valuable in itself, and over time, kindness often builds stronger professional relationships than competition ever will.
Another important lesson is not to walk alone. Seek mentors. Ask questions. Learn from more experienced practitioners. Nobody expects a young lawyer to know everything, but everyone appreciates someone who is eager to learn.
Finally, stay curious. Read widely, attend conferences and meet people from diverse backgrounds and remain open to opportunities that may not have been part of your original plan. If Adam’s own journey has taught him anything, it is that careers are rarely linear. Sometimes the most rewarding opportunities are precisely those you never expected.
