Lukman Audu is a Human Rights Lawyer specialising in the protection and promotion of the rights of IDPs, detainees, and refugees. He addresses human rights abuses, inequalities, and social injustice through legal advocacy, policy reforms, and community engagement. As a Partner at Law Locus Solicitors, and member of the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales, Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators, as well as the Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (UK), he leverages his expertise in dispute resolution to tackle complex legal challenges and uphold human rights.
Lukman is committed to facilitating equal access to justice, particularly for prisoners and those arbitrarily detained, through JUSTICE FOR ALL INITIATIVE. He holds an LL.M in International Human Rights Law from the University of Essex. Driven by a passion for the rule of law, environmental rights, and sustainability, Lukman advocates for social justice, human rights, and environmental justice in Africa and Europe.
1. Every great journey begins with a spark, what ignited Lukman’s passion for the Legal profession, and what continues to make the practice of law a deeply fulfilling pursuit for him?
Every meaningful journey has a defining moment, a seemingly ordinary conversation that quietly alters the course of one’s life. For Lukman, it happened in November 2013.
Fresh out of secondary school, He had already mapped out what he believed would be his future. He had purchased an application form to study for a National Certificate in Education at Sir Kashim Ibrahim College of Education (KICE), Maiduguri (now Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri). Becoming a teacher was the dream he had nurtured for years. Lukman loved learning, and perhaps even more than learning, he loved teaching. There was something deeply satisfying about taking difficult ideas and breaking them down into practical concepts that others could easily understand.
Then came a conversation with someone who would unknowingly change the trajectory of his life. Muhammed A. Audu, Esq., who was then a teacher preparing to study law, looked at his academic results and saw something he had never seen in himself. After reviewing Lukman’s WAEC and NECO grades, he simply said, “With these results, you should study law.”
To him, it was a straightforward observation. To Lukman , it was a revelation. The truth is, he had never imagined becoming a lawyer. He did not come from a family of lawyers, nor did he have legal role models growing up. In fact, he had never seen anyone in his immediate family attend university. Law was a profession he admired from a distance, but never one he believed was within his reach.
What he has since learned is that mentors often see possibilities long before we can see them ourselves. They possess the rare ability to recognise potential hidden beneath self-doubt. As the saying goes, you cannot fully see yourself when you are inside the frame. He trusted Muhammed’s judgment enough to change his plans. He enrolled in the Remedial Programme at the University of Maiduguri, gained admission to study law, and years later, they both fulfilled that dream. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2021, and Lukman followed in 2022.
Looking back today, he can confidently say that a single conversation redirected the course of his destiny. But, what keeps his passion alive today is something far greater than the title of “lawyer.” It is the privilege of participating in the administration of justice, which is a responsibility that transcends personal ambition. There is no greater professional fulfilment than witnessing a client regain freedom after unlawful detention, seeing constitutional rights restored, or standing before a court to defend someone who lacks both voice and influence. Every successful human rights case reinforces his belief that law is not merely a profession; it is one of society’s most powerful instruments for restoring dignity and protecting humanity.
For Lukman, the practice of law is at its noblest when it serves those who cannot stand for themselves and speaks for those whose voices have been silenced. That is why human rights litigation and public interest advocacy remain the most fulfilling aspects of his legal journey.
2. The legal landscape is constantly evolving. In Lukman’s opinion, what qualities define a truly exceptional lawyer in today’s world, and how can young professionals cultivate these attributes?
In Lukman’s words, he says that, the law has never been static. It evolves alongside society, technology, commerce, and human behaviour. Consequently, exceptional lawyers are not necessarily those who know the most law today, but those who possess the capacity to continually evolve with tomorrow’s realities.
Therefore, first defining quality is adaptability. Nature teaches us that survival does not always belong to the strongest, but often to those most capable of adapting to change. The same principle applies to legal practice. For instance, Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the legal profession across the world. Tasks that once required countless hours of legal research can now be completed in minutes. We have witnessed the emergence of AI-powered legal platforms, AI-assisted legal drafting, and even discussions around robotic legal representation in some jurisdictions. These developments are no longer futuristic concepts; they are present realities. As a result of this, rather than resisting the change, exceptional lawyers embrace it. They understand that relevance demands a continuous cycle of learning, unlearning outdated methods, and relearning better ones. The willingness to remain intellectually curious is perhaps the greatest competitive advantage any lawyer can possess in the twenty-first century.
Secondly, exceptional lawyers understand the power of collaboration. Law has never been a solitary profession. Even our Rules of Professional Conduct recognise partnerships and professional associations because the administration of justice flourishes through collective effort. No single lawyer possesses all the answers. The most effective legal solutions often emerge from diverse perspectives and collaborative thinking. As an African proverb wisely reminds us: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” That timeless wisdom remains profoundly relevant to modern legal practice.
Above all else, integrity remains the foundation upon which every exceptional legal career must stand. Reputation is built slowly but can be destroyed instantly. A lawyer’s word must remain dependable. Clients, colleagues, judges, and society must know that when an exceptional lawyer gives an undertaking, it will be honoured. Technical competence may open doors, but integrity is what keeps them open. Therefore, for young lawyers seeking to cultivate these qualities, he believes the starting point is developing an open and growth-oriented mindset. Never assume that your legal education is complete after law school or the Nigerian Law School. The legal profession rewards lifelong learners. Read widely, remain intellectually humble, embrace technology, seek mentorship, collaborate generously, and never compromise your ethical standards.
In the end, legal excellence is not measured solely by what you know; it is measured by who you become while practising the law. Become an exceptionally honest and adaptable lawyer.
3. True leaders are always thinking ahead. What is the next groundbreaking project or initiative that Lukman is or would be working on and what impact is he hoping it will make?
For him, every meaningful project begins with a simple question: How can the law serve those who need it the most? That question became even more compelling after one of the most defining moments of his professional journey. In April 2025, he had the honour of presenting his research on the protection of human rights and the prevention of arbitrary detention before the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the Human Rights Council at the United Nations Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland.
Standing before distinguished experts from different parts of the world, he was reminded that arbitrary detention is both legal issue and a human tragedy. Behind every unlawful detention is a family waiting, a livelihood interrupted, a child missing a parent, and a citizen deprived of dignity. Upon his return to Nigeria, he immediately began taking practical steps towards establishing a human rights and access-to-justice organisation dedicated to bridging the gap between constitutional guarantees and the realities experienced by many vulnerable Nigerians.
He says the vision is ambitious but achievable. The organisation will focus on facilitating free legal representation for indigent persons, combating arbitrary detention, promoting constitutional rights, strengthening access to justice, and advancing public interest litigation across Nigeria and, ultimately, beyond its borders. One of their flagship initiatives will be building a nationwide network of public interest lawyers committed to representing persons awaiting trial who cannot afford legal representation. Across Nigeria, correctional facilities remain overcrowded, with thousands of inmates spending years in detention without timely trials. Many remain behind bars because they lack access to competent legal representation. Justice delayed is often justice denied.
His aspiration is to contribute meaningfully to reducing prison congestion, ensuring that constitutional safeguards become practical realities, and restoring hope to individuals who have long been forgotten by the justice system. He believes that if, through this initiative, one innocent person regains freedom, one family is reunited, or one citizen rediscovers confidence in the justice system, then every sacrifice invested in building the organisation will have been worthwhile.
Ultimately, he hopes the organisation becomes a movement that inspires lawyers across Africa to view access to justice as a professional obligation and a moral responsibility.
4. Which legal minds have profoundly influenced Lukman’s journey, and what book has shaped or is shaping his thoughts and perspectives?
Unlike many lawyers who grew up surrounded by legal practitioners, his journey into the profession began without the privilege of legal role models within my family. No one in his immediate family had studied law, and for much of his early life, the legal profession seemed both admirable and distant.
Perhaps that is why he has never believed that influence comes only from proximity. Sometimes, the people who shape your destiny are those who simply believe in your potential before you believe in yourself.
Muhammed A. Audu, Esq. occupies a unique place in his journey. Long before he could imagine himself wearing a wig and gown, he recognised in him the capacity to become a lawyer.
Beyond that pivotal mentorship, he has been inspired by several outstanding legal scholars and practitioners whose careers exemplify excellence and service. Among them are Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, Professor Mamman Tahir, SAN, Professor Damilola Olawuyi, SAN, and Chief Femi Falana, SAN.
Each of these distinguished legal minds represents a different dimension of legal excellence scholarship, leadership, advocacy, courage, and public service and together they have shaped his understanding of what it truly means to practise law with purpose. Beyond individuals, books has also played an indispensable role in shaping his worldview. He has come to appreciate that every great leader is first an intentional reader. He believes that books allow us to borrow decades of wisdom from those who have travelled the path before us.
Among the works that have profoundly influenced his thinking are the Holy Qur’an and Bible (particularly the Book of Proverbs). These books fundamentally changed how he approaches leadership, discipline, and personal responsibility. They taught him that sustainable success is less about talent and more about character, principles, and consistent habits.
5. For those who are just beginning, the path may seem daunting. What advice or guiding principles would Lukman offer young legal professionals and advocates trying to find their place and purpose in the legal terrain?
If there is one lesson his journey has taught him, it is this: every worthwhile dream comes with a price tag. Many people celebrate success, but very few appreciate the sacrifices that precede it. Behind every accomplished lawyer are years of uncertainty, difficult choices, financial struggles, moments of self-doubt, and countless sacrifices that rarely make the headlines.
The larger your vision, the greater the price you must be willing to pay. Sometimes that price demands leaving the familiarity of home. Sometimes it requires sacrificing comfort, sleep, financial security, or immediate gratification. At other times, it simply requires the courage to persist when progress appears invisible.
His own journey was far from conventional. There were seasons when he rode commercial motorcycles (Okada) on the busy streets of Lagos to support his education and pursue his dreams. There were moments when the destination seemed impossibly distant. Yet every challenge became a lesson in resilience, humility, and perseverance. He went further to say that, many young lawyers will face different struggles. Some may begin their careers in small law firms where their talents appear underutilised. Others may experience repeated rejections, financial hardship, or delayed opportunities. Those experiences should never be mistaken for failure. They are often the training ground upon which remarkable careers are built.
Do not allow your current circumstances to define your future possibilities. Where you begin is far less important than the direction in which you are moving. Remain teachable. Seek mentors. Read relentlessly. Invest in your professional development. Build meaningful relationships rather than merely expanding your network. Protect your integrity even when dishonesty appears more profitable. Excellence should become your daily habit rather than an occasional achievement.
Most importantly, never lose sight of why you chose this profession. The legal profession is not merely about winning cases or earning titles. At its finest, it is about restoring hope, defending the vulnerable, preserving the rule of law, and ensuring that justice remains accessible to every member of society, regardless of status or circumstance. If you remain patient, disciplined, resilient, and faithful to your values, success will eventually become a natural consequence of consistent effort.
In conclusion, the practice of law is a lifelong commitment to service and justice. And there is no greater legacy a lawyer can leave than using the law to make life more just, more humane, and more dignified for others.
