Edith Michael Mtweve: Africa’s Legal Millennial

Your path will not be linear, embrace that.”- Edith Michael Mtweve

Edith Michael Mtweve is a Tanzanian advocate and licensed legal consultant with a distinguished practice spanning international and domestic arbitration/mediation, ICT and telecoms regulation, cybersecurity, and data protection compliance. Over the past years, she has advised mobile network operators, fintech entities, global ICT infrastructure companies, and multinational technology platforms on complex regulatory, transactional, and dispute-management matters. Her arbitration practice includes representing clients in commercial, construction, and mining disputes before national and international tribunals under TIArb, NCC, and UNCITRAL frameworks. Edith has served as Counsel in high-value arbitrations and judicial proceedings involving award enforcement, tribunal challenges, and setting-aside applications before the High Court (Commercial Division). She also has mediation experience representing clients before the Bank of Tanzania.

Edith holds a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration and International Investment Arbitration (Africa Arbitration Academy, London) and an LL.M in Oil and Gas. Her international training includes the Hague Academy of International Law, the African Institute of International Law, and specialised courses by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) (London) and Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) (London). She has also been invited to present on arbitration and ADR reform, cross-border dispute resolution, and the role of ADR in Africa’s commercial landscape during high-level forums, including the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU), Tanzania Institute of Arbitrators (TIArb), Tanzania Institute of International Law (TIAC) and other platforms.

Passionate about developing Tanzania’s ADR ecosystem, Edith serves as Chairperson of the TIArb Young Members Club and a Governing Council Member of the Tanzania Institute of Arbitrators (TIArb), where she promotes capacity-building, policy alignment with global standards, and opportunities for young practitioners. She also serves as a committee member of the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa (AFSA). As Co-founder of Victors Hub Limited (VICON), she co-organises the annual Victory Attorneys National Moot Court Competition, and supports young lawyers through scholarships, internships, mentorship, and structured advocacy training. Edith has authored regulatory compliance matrices, privacy frameworks, and governance tools for major telecommunications operators. She participated in drafting Tanzania’s Model Bill on Data Protection and Privacy and has delivered multiple presentations on data governance, cyber-risk, and privacy compliance at national and regional forums. She also serves as a Member of the East African Law Society (EALS) Data Protection & Privacy Committee. She is a member of various professional bodies such as American Society of International Law (ASIL), CIArb, Young ICCA, PALU, AFSA Young ICSID, YIAG, LCIA -African Users’ Council, TIArb, TIAC, EALS, and the Tanganyika Law Society.

1. The Driving Force for Choosing the legal profession.

Edith’s passion for the legal profession began when she was about 6-7 years old. She vividly remembers noting down discontents that she had with her parents’ actions at home. She would then present all her issues in formal letters explaining her discontent and the remedies that she sought from them, and then pass the letters through the door opening to their room. At first, her parents were surprised, but later on they understood that she was advocating for herself, and they began to take note of the issues presented. Her mom still has some of these letters…

Her passion was further reignited in high school. Through reading, she grew a deep curiosity about how societies organise themselves, how principles, institutions, and rules shape the everyday realities of people, communities, and economies. Growing up in Tanzania, she witnessed first-hand the transformative power of law in areas such as governance, natural resources, technology, and human rights. That early exposure sparked a desire to understand, influence, and ultimately strengthen the systems that guided societal progress.

What continues to fulfil her is the somewhat unique vantage point she occupies: at the intersection of international law, domestic regulation, emerging technologies, and arbitration practice. Her work across courts, arbitral tribunals, and regulatory advisory particularly in data protection, telecoms, and fintech allows her to solve complex, cross-border problems that require both legal precision and strategic foresight.

Each case, each policy reform, and each compliance project carry impact. The privilege of shaping frameworks, resolving disputes, and advising institutions while empowering the next generation of lawyers keeps her legal journey deeply meaningful.

2. Qualities of an Exceptional Lawyer and How Young Professionals Cultivate Such Attributes.

Today’s most exceptional lawyers must embody agility, depth, courage, and global consciousness:

      • Agility: because the profession has expanded into new frontiers; technology governance, cybersecurity, AI regulation, cross-border arbitration, climate impacts, digital rights, and more.

      • Depth: meaning mastery in core legal principles whilst engaging in specialised areas such as investment arbitration, data privacy, and ICT regulation.

      • Courage: to advocate ethically, challenge outdated norms, and lead conversations that matter.

      • Global consciousness: because law no longer stops at national borders. Edith’s training at the Hague Academy, of International Law, the African Institute of International Law, and the Africa Arbitration Academy showed her how interconnected legal systems are.

For young lawyers, cultivating these qualities requires intentional investment: They can engage in moot courts and research programmes in an effort to sharpen advocacy, discipline, and creativity; pursue mentorship and global exposure; read widely and think broadly; and develop integrity, humility, and consistency.

    3. Significant Ongoing Project or Initiatives and Possible Impact.

    i. Advancement and Promotion of Arbitration and ADR Practice in Tanzania.

In Edith’s capacity within the Governing Council of the Tanzania Institute of Arbitrators (TIArb), including her service as a Chairperson of the TIArb Young Members Club; her work focuses on advancing and strengthening arbitration and ADR practice in Tanzania. This includes promoting modern, efficient dispute-resolution mechanisms, building national capacity, and supporting policy and regulatory reforms that align with international and regional arbitration standards. A core part of her mandate is empowering young practitioners, equipping them with substantive arbitration knowledge, practical exposure, and meaningful mentorships to prepare them for domestic and international practice.

ii. Building a National Pipeline of Skilled Advocates Through VICON

As a Founder and Director at Victors Hub Limited (VICON), a non-profit company; Edith is committed to supporting the professional development of young law students across Tanzania. Through initiatives such as the Victory Attorneys National Moot Court Competition (organised annually since 2021), VICON builds strong advocacy skills, nurtures legal talent, and promotes academic excellence. Her works also extend to providing scholarships, legal internships, and mentorship opportunities, ensuring that aspiring lawyers regardless of their background can access the training, exposure, and support they need to thrive in the legal profession.

iii. Strengthening Africa’s technology governance and data protection ecosystem

Drawing from Edith’s work with mobile network operators, global ICT companies, and regulatory bodies and her involvement in drafting Tanzania’s Model Bill on Data Protection and Privacy; she is working toward frameworks that harmonise cross-border digital compliance, strengthen institutional capacity, and support safe, ethical innovation across the continent. Her goal is to contribute to a future where African countries are not just consumers but shapers of global data governance and AI regulation.

    4. Role Models and Impactful Books.

Edith draws profound inspiration from distinguished African international law experts, judges and jurists whose scholarship, jurisprudence, and leadership have shaped her professional journey.

        • Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf of the International Court of Justice has greatly influenced her to pursue a career in international law; whose writings, particularly “Pan-Africanism and International Law”, has deeply influenced her understanding of Africa’s place within the global legal order, he remains a foundational figure in her development.

        • Judge Dire Tladi of the International Court of Justice an exceptional scholar and practitioner whose work on international law, state responsibility, and the use of force has sharpened her analytical approach.

        • Ndanga Kamau, a leading international arbitrator, has strengthened her commitment to excellence in international commercial and investment arbitration.

          • Professor Hajer Gueldich, current Legal Counsel of the African Union, has significantly shaped her perspective on regional governance, treaty frameworks, and Africa’s evolving institutional architecture.

Edith is privileged to have been trained, mentored, or taught by these remarkable luminaries, whose contributions continue to guide and inspire her work in international law and alternative dispute resolution.

Edith’s journey has also been inspired by global jurists, mentors, and arbitration practitioners who have shaped international arbitration, public international law, and Africa’s regulatory evolution. Mentors and scholars from the Young ICCA Mentorship Programme, the ASIL-WILIG Mentoring Program, and instructors from the Hague Academy of International Law, African Institute of International Law (AIIL) and the Africa Arbitration Academy reinforced her commitment to excellence, discipline, and global vision.

        5. Advice or Guiding Principles for Young Legal Professionals and Advocates.

To young lawyers, Edith would say: Your path will not be linear, embrace that. The beauty of the legal profession lies in its diversity. Edith began her journey from the classrooms of the University of Dar es Salaam, strengthened it through international exposure in the Netherlands, USA and UK amongst others, refined it through arbitration practice, and expanded it into data protection, ICT regulation, and compliance advisory. Every stage enriched the next.

        Edith’s guiding principles are:

            1. Be disciplined. Excellence is built in quiet hours of dedication, research, and preparation.

            1. Be bold. Participate in moot courts, apply for international trainings, write, speak, and challenge yourself.

            1. Be ethical. Your reputation will carry you further than any single accomplishment.

            1. Be curious. The future belongs to lawyers who understand both law and the world around it, that is, technology, governance, economics.

            1. Be generous. Lift others as you rise. Whether through mentorship, training, or encouragement, contribute to the profession’s growth.

            1. Be you: Above all, believe that your voice matters. Use it to shape, influence, and reimagine the future you want to see.
