Her story is one of defiance, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to justice—a legacy that continues to inspire and transform communities worldwide. Her Firm’s mission is to be a Legal service with a Difference.

1. Every great journey begins with a spark. What ignited Njiramanda’s passion for the legal profession and what continues to make the practice of law a deeply fulfilling pursuit for her?

Njiramanda’s passion for the legal profession was ignited by a deep-seated desire to not only be the voice to the voiceless, but to create meaningful change for marginalised communities, particularly those at the intersections of human rights, migration, and gender justice. Growing up, she witnessed the systemic inequalities that left vulnerable groups without adequate legal protection or access to justice. This triggered her to pursue law, not merely as a profession, but as a passion and tool for justice and empowerment. She strongly identifies with “Rosa Parks” as her alter ego.

What continues to make the practice of law deeply fulfilling for Njiramanda is the tangible impact of her work. Whether advocating against abuse (GBV), facilitating adoption, practicing commercial law, pushing for policy reforms, providing legal services to those who would otherwise be unheard, or mentoring the next generation of human rights lawyers, businesswomen, and those in STEM, she remains committed to using the law as a force for justice and empowerment. The fulfilment, she notes, is priceless! Through her firm, Mbewe Legal Practice and her leadership roles as Commissioner in the National Gender Commission of the Republic of Botswana or as Chairperson of Non-Governmental organisations like the Botswana Network of Ethics Law and HIV/AIDS known as “BONELA”, she bridges the gap between legal frameworks and real-world justice, ensuring that the law serves those who need it most. She reflects that her journey is one of defiance in the pursuit of purpose, remaining steadfast in the belief that justice must be accessible, equitable, and inclusive for all.

2. The legal landscape is constantly evolving. In Njiramanda’s opinion, what qualities define a truly exceptional lawyer in today’s world, and how can young professionals cultivate these attributes?

Njiramanda believes that a truly exceptional lawyer in today’s world must be strategic and possess a combination of technical expertise, ethical integrity, adaptability, and a deep commitment to justice. Beyond legal knowledge, she emphasises the importance of empathy, resilience, and strategic thinking, especially in human rights law, where the ability to navigate complex social, political, and cultural dynamics is crucial. For young professionals looking to cultivate these attributes, she advises that a strong foundation in legal principles is non-negotiable. Aspiring lawyers should continuously update their knowledge to stay ahead of evolving legal frameworks. She posits that understanding and connecting with clients on a human level is vital, particularly when working with marginalised communities.

The legal profession is demanding, and setbacks are inevitable. She advises that remaining steadfast in the face of challenges is what sets exceptional lawyers apart. Young lawyers should align their work with causes they are passionate about and seek opportunities to make a tangible impact. Learning from experienced professionals and building strong networks can open doors and provide guidance in navigating the profession. Lastly, the legal landscape is dynamic, it requires continuous education, whether through formal studies, workshops, or real-world experience. She believes that young lawyers who embrace these principles will not only excel in their careers but also contribute meaningfully to justice and societal progress. “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

3. True leaders are always thinking ahead. What is the next groundbreaking project or initiative that Njiramanda is or would be working on and what impact is she hoping it would create?

Be on the lookout! ….Njiramanda is always at the forefront of transformative initiatives, and one of her next major projects could likely be tied to her growing influence in human rights advocacy, legal reform, and mentorship. Given her recent leadership roles, her next groundbreaking initiative might focus on strengthening legal protections and access to justice for marginalised communities. She has also thought of innovative ways of addressing Gender Based Violence in her Country. A potential initiative could be a structured program that would equip young lawyers and activists with the skills, resources, and mentorship needed to drive legal and policy change across Africa. This initiative would provide hands-on training in human rights law, strategic litigation, and advocacy, fostering a new generation of legal practitioners committed to justice.

Her middle name is “Impact” and so she questions what impact is. She states that it is a ripple effect of legal empowerment, where lawyers are not just practitioners but change-makers, ensuring that the law works for the people who need it most. By amplifying voices that are often silenced, she envisions a legal landscape where justice is not a privilege but a right accessible to all.

4. Which legal minds have profoundly influenced Njiramanda’s journey, and what book has shaped or is shaping her thoughts and perspectives?

Njiramanda has been influenced by several legal minds whose works in human rights, constitutional law, and social justice have shaped her journey. Some of these figures include:

Justice Mercy Garekwe– A respected Judge in Botswana’s apex court, the second female to ascend to the Court of Appeal from the High Court, shaping the country’s legal landscape through her rulings. She has also been a mentor and taught her so much.

Athaliah Molokomme – Botswana’s first female Attorney General, whose work in law reform and governance has demonstrated the power of legal leadership in shaping policy and justice systems.

Beatrice Mtetwa – A fearless human rights lawyer from Zimbabwe, known for defending journalists and activists against state repression whom she met at a Strategic Litigation workshop in South Africa; and notably.

His Excellency the President Advocate Duma Boko – A constitutional lawyer and former leader of the opposition, known for his eloquence and advocacy for civil liberties and the rule of law. His strategic approach to legal challenges has influenced her perspective on litigation as a tool for social justice. He has also taught me how to be resilient.

A book that has had a profound impact on how she thinks is “Conversations with Myself” by Nelson Mandela. The book has offered her personal reflections on leadership, justice, and resilience, principles that align with her journey of using the law as a tool for empowerment and social change. It has also taught her to know and accept herself, and that the greatest love is of self.  Additionally, “The Light We Carry” by Michelle Obama. The book has offered her practical wisdom, strategies for navigating uncertainty, building confidence and finding balance, resilience, self-awareness and the importance of community. It has also taught her how to deal with fear, how to embrace change and maintain hope as a Lawyer and a mother. She notes that she is bolder and understands that through her mentorship programs or sessions, one light can feed another.

Currently, she is reading “Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office” and “Lean in: Women, Work and the Will to Lead.” These works continue to reinforce her commitment to remaining defiant in the pursuit of justice and human rights. As a wife, she learned about William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116 when she was still in high school and can recite it in her sleep! However, as a family woman who specialises in family law, where there is an irretrievable breakdown in a marriage, I am adept at handling cases involving divorce, maintenance, and access to children.

5. For those who are just beginning, the path may seem daunting. What advice or guiding principles would Njiramanda offer young legal professionals and advocates trying to find their place and purpose in the legal terrain?

Njiramanda understands that stepping into the legal profession, especially for those driven by justice and advocacy, can feel overwhelming. To young legal professionals and advocates seeking their place and purpose, she offers the following guiding principles: The law is more than a career—it’s a calling. Take time to reflect on why you chose this path and let that purpose guide you through challenges. Whether it’s human rights, corporate law, or public service, clarity of purpose will anchor you.

Real impact comes from knowing when to challenge unjust laws and push for legal reforms. The legal profession is demanding, and the fight for justice is often met with resistance. There will be setbacks, but persistence is key. Keep going, even when the odds seem stacked against you. Find mentors who can guide you and a network of like-minded professionals who will support you. Engage in conversations, seek counsel, and never be afraid to ask for help. Whether in the courtroom or policy work, remember that the law affects real lives. Approach your work with compassion and ensure that those most vulnerable are at the centre of your advocacy. She is a firm believer in taking up space, owning your expertise, contributing to important conversations, and positioning yourself as a leader early on.

Lastly, she notes that the journey will test you but never lose sight of who you are and what you stand for. Remain authentic, grounded, and unwavering in your commitment to justice. Don’t forget to have a sense of humour!
